Admissions committees read hundreds of SOPs, and if your opening doesn't spark interest immediately, the rest of your story won't land the way it should.

"Since childhood, I have always been fascinated by ..." or "I am extremely excited to apply for this position...."

It sounds nice, but it doesn't say anything.

A strong SOP introduction does one thing. It tells the reader exactly why you're here and where you're going.

Start with purpose; clarity; and intention

Your intro should answer three questions quickly:

  • What do you want to study?

  • Why does it matter to you?

When you open with directional instead of drama, the reader immediately trusts your story and pays attention to the rest.
