University of Michigan PIBS 2027: One Application to 14 Biomedical PhD Programs (Deadline 1 December)

PhD position

10/17/2026

Deadline: 1 December 2026 (11:59 pm EST) | Location: Ann Arbor, USA | Fields: Biomedical Sciences | GRE: Not required

If you want a PhD in the biomedical sciences but haven’t settled on one subfield, PIBS at the University of Michigan lets you apply once and be considered for several programmes. The 2027 application is open and closes on 1 December.

What is PIBS?

PIBS is an interdisciplinary gateway that coordinates admissions and first-year graduate studies for 14 doctoral programmes with more than 500 faculty laboratories. The programmes are Bioinformatics, Biological Chemistry, Cancer Biology, Cell & Developmental Biology, Cellular & Molecular Biology, Genetics and Genomics, Health Infrastructures & Learning Systems, Immunology, Microbiology & Immunology, Molecular, Cellular & Developmental Biology, Molecular & Cellular Pathology, Molecular & Integrative Physiology, Neuroscience and Pharmacology.

Important for international applicants

This is the part to read carefully before you invest time in an application.

  • Admission is very competitive. PIBS accepts 5% or less of the international applications it receives each year. For the class of 2026, there were 662 international applications and 62 international interviews, compared with 1,533 domestic applications and 242 domestic interviews.

  • Not every programme accepts international students. Cancer Biology, Cellular & Molecular Biology, Immunology, Molecular, Cellular & Developmental Biology, and Molecular & Cellular Pathology do not accept international applicants through PIBS, because they use federal training grants that require US citizens or permanent residents.

  • Microbiology & Immunology is restricted. It only accepts international students who are currently undergraduate or graduate students in the US on an F1 visa.

Key dates

  • Applications open: early September

  • Deadline for all materials: 1 December 2026, 11:59 pm EST, including recommendation letters

  • Review: begins after the 1 December deadline, after which applicants are either invited to interview or notified of a declined admission

  • Interviews and decisions: January to April, with applicants choosing one of two interview weekends and decisions made after interviews

What you need to apply

You submit a single application through the Rackham Graduate School. If you submit more than one, only the first is considered, with no refund of fees for the others. The requirements are:

  • Two programme choices, in rank order. These choices are not binding and are used to decide which programmes review your application.

  • A Statement of Purpose. It should describe your research background, career goals and how Michigan will help you meet them, with a detailed account of your research experience strongly recommended, and it is limited to two pages.

  • A Personal Statement. It describes how your background and life experiences motivated your decision to pursue graduate study at Michigan, including any major obstacles you overcame, in 500 words or fewer.

  • Three letters of recommendation. These come from research mentors or professors who can assess your scientific potential, and they must arrive electronically by 1 December.

  • Transcripts. Upload scanned official transcripts for every institution attended, front and back for non-US institutions. Official transcripts only need to be sent to Rackham if you are recommended for admission.

  • English proficiency. International applicants whose native language is not English must demonstrate proficiency through the TOEFL, subject to Rackham’s exemption criteria.

  • GRE. GRE scores are not required.

  • Fee. The application fee is $90 for international applicants.

What the committee looks for

Strong candidates have extensive laboratory research experience, ideally including published abstracts or papers, strong letters from lab mentors, motivation to pursue research in an interdisciplinary environment, and an excellent academic record. For the class of 2026, the average undergraduate GPA was 3.77 and admitted students had an average of 3.3 years of prior research experience.

Tips for a strong application

  • Check programme eligibility first. With five programmes closed to international applicants, your ranked choices need to come from the programmes you can actually be admitted to.

  • Make the research experience the centre of your Statement of Purpose. Describe specific projects, your role in them and what you learned, rather than summarising your CV.

  • Take the Personal Statement seriously. It is a separate document with its own purpose, not a shorter version of the Statement of Purpose.

  • Choose recommenders who supervised your lab work. The page specifically asks for letters from research mentors.

  • Plan for the TOEFL early if it applies to you, since score reports take time to arrive.
