UChicago Social Sciences PhD 2027: Fully Funded Doctoral Programs, Deadline 1 December
PhD position
10/17/2026
Deadline: 1 December 2026 (11:59 p.m. US Central Time) | Location: Chicago, USA | Fields: Social Sciences | Funding: Guaranteed for the duration of the programme
The University of Chicago’s Division of the Social Sciences admits PhD students to a wide range of social science programmes, with one deadline for all of them. Applications for Autumn 2027 close on 1 December, and the Division does not make exceptions on timing.
Deadline
The application deadline for all PhD programmes is December 1, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. U.S. Central Time. The Division does not accept late applications, though the University’s Hardship Request policy allows possible extensions in cases of widespread disaster or disruption to services.
Funding
This is a major strength of the programme. All PhD students in the Division are funded for the duration of their programme with support from the University, external sources, or a combination of the two, regardless of citizenship or other factors. While enrolled, funding includes:
Tuition
Individual U-SHIP health insurance premium
Graduate Student Services Fee
A divisional fellowship or assistantship
For 2026-27 the Division’s annualised minimum fellowship or assistantship is $47,741, paid as $3,978.41 per month of enrolment before any applicable tax withholding.
The Division is also open about how competitive admission is: limited resources mean many strong applicants are turned away every year.
Work authorisation for international students
Students must be legally authorised to work in the United States in order to meet the degree requirements for most of the University’s PhD programmes. The F-1/J-1 student visa permits on-campus employment while a student is active in their programme. International applicants should read the details on the Division’s funding page before applying.
What happens after you apply
Interviews: Most PhD programmes interview applicants. Invitations go out through the online application system in January or February, and applicants who are not selected are notified at the same time. For 2027, the programmes that interview include Anthropology, Comparative Human Development, History, Political Economy, Political Science, Psychology and Sociology.
Decisions: PhD programmes typically issue decisions at the end of February or in early March.
Responding to offers: Admitted students are asked to respond by April 15.
Deferral: The Division does not defer PhD admission, except for sanctioned dual programmes with the law or medical school.
MA fallback: Applicants who are not admitted to the PhD are automatically considered for the Division’s MA programmes unless they opt out, though scholarship assistance for MA offers made this way may be limited.
Application materials
The Division’s application pages cover transcripts, letters of recommendation, a candidate statement, a writing sample, the GRE General Test, English proficiency requirements and an application fee. Check each page, because requirements can differ by programme.

Tips for a strong application
Start with the writing sample and candidate statement. These take the longest to get right, and they are where you show research fit.
Match yourself to the department, not just the university. Each programme reads applications separately and sets its own priorities.
Ask referees early. Early December is a busy period for academics writing letters.
Prepare for an interview. If your programme interviews, invitations arrive in January or February, so have a clear two-minute account of your research interests ready.
