Stanford CS PhD 2027: Funded Computer Science PhD with First-Year Research Rotations (USA)
PhD position
11/6/2026
Deadline: 8 December 2026 | Location: Stanford, California, USA | Field: Computer Science | Start: Autumn quarter 2027 | GRE: Not required
Stanford's Computer Science department is accepting PhD applications for autumn 2027. The programme is research-oriented with few course requirements, every CS PhD student is guaranteed funding while making satisfactory progress, and first-year students rotate through research groups before choosing an advisor. Applications close on 8 December 2026, and the department states that its deadlines are final.
About the programme
The Stanford CS PhD is built around research from the start. In the first year, students can rotate through three research groups, one per academic quarter (a fourth may be granted as an exception). The goal of the rotation programme is to find an advisor, and students are expected to align with one by the end of spring, with the alignment decision due on 15 June.
You do not need a computer science degree to apply. Strong quantitative and analytical skills are what matter. The department's FAQ notes that typical PhD applicants have a GPA of at least 3.6 on a 4.0 scale.
Funding
The department states that all CS PhD students are guaranteed funding as long as they make satisfactory academic progress. The department's funding pages cover research assistantships, course assistantships and fellowship opportunities. If you win an external fellowship, the department reconfigures your funding package around it.
Key dates
Application opened: 15 September 2026
Application deadline: 8 December 2026
Decision letters: sent electronically starting by mid-February 2027, with decisions made in late February
Deferral requests (admitted applicants): due 11 April
Entry: autumn quarter only
Who can apply?
Applicants need a bachelor's degree or its international equivalent. Stanford's Graduate Admissions eligibility page has region-specific details for degrees from outside the US.
A few points from the official FAQ:
GRE: not required and not considered for PhD applicants
TOEFL or IELTS Academic: required if your first language is not English, regardless of citizenship. Scores must come from a test taken within the last 24 months. Exemptions include applicants who self-declare English as their first language and those with a degree from a university where instruction is in English.
Master's students: an MS does not automatically lead to a PhD, so you must apply directly to the PhD. Up to 45 units from a prior MS may count toward residency, by petition.
Not eligible: anyone who already holds a CS PhD from another institution
One application per term: you may submit only one PhD application per academic term
Fee waivers: available if you can't pay by credit card or if the fee is a financial burden
What you need to apply
Submit the online application through Stanford Graduate Admissions. The CS department publishes a graduate application checklist with the full list of materials, including your statement of purpose, letters of recommendation, transcripts and English test scores where required.
On the statement of purpose, the FAQ gives two different limits (two pages, and 8,000 characters including spaces), so confirm the current limit in the application instructions before you finalise yours.
How to apply
Apply at gradadmissions.stanford.edu/apply. See the CS PhD Admissions page, the application deadlines and the PhD admissions FAQ. Eligibility questions go to admissions@cs.stanford.edu.
Tips for a strong application
Use the rotation system in your statement. You don't need to commit to one advisor. Name two or three research directions and the groups doing that work.
Show research, not just grades. With few course requirements, the programme is looking for evidence that you can do research. Describe what you built, tested or proved, and what you learned when it didn't work.
Write tight. Whatever the final limit, a short statement means every sentence has to earn its place.
Book your English test now if you need one, and make sure the test date falls within the 24-month window.
Don't miss 8 December. The department does not accept late applications.
