Postdoctoral Fellow Opportunities: NSF AI Institute for Human-AI Cooperation (NSF HAIC)
Postdoc position
9/26/2026
Want to help build trustworthy collaborative AI that reshapes the future of rehabilitation and healthcare — backed by a $21.5M, multi-institutional NSF grant? NSF HAIC is recruiting multiple Postdoctoral Fellows.
If you work at the intersection of AI, biomechanics, robotics, or computational neuroscience and want your research to plug directly into real pilot projects — with wearable robotics, instrumented labs, and dedicated engineering support behind you — this is a substantial opportunity.
About the Position
Role: Postdoctoral Fellow (multiple positions)
Host: NSF AI Institute for Human-AI Cooperation (NSF HAIC), primarily based at the University of Delaware (UD)
Funding: $21.5 million, 5-year NSF grant (2026–2031)
Partner institutions: Delaware State University, University of Pennsylvania (GRASP Lab, Wharton, Perelman School of Medicine), Princeton University, University of Florida, and others — with opportunities for joint appointments and co-mentorship
Start date: By early 2027
About the Institute
NSF HAIC's mission is to develop trustworthy collaborative AI that strengthens human expertise, with an initial focus on shaping the future of neuromuscular rehabilitation, physical therapy, and healthcare — while also cultivating the next generation of AI leaders. Fellows will contribute to one or more of three thematic working groups:
Integration and extraction of actionable information from multimodal spatiotemporal data — physiological signals, imagery, and natural language — via adaptive machine learning
Personalization of sequential decision-making, biophysical digital twins, and the operation of digital and physical systems
Human-AI symbiosis, with the initial use case of aiding neuromuscular rehabilitation
Fellows will work on foundational AI advancements motivated by these use cases, then bridge those advances into current and future pilot projects — with access to instrumented biomechanical labs, wearable robotics and exoskeletons, extensive datasets, HPC infrastructure, dedicated Research Software Engineers, and NVIDIA software engineer support.
What They're Looking For
Required:
A PhD (by early 2027) in computer science, data science, biomedical/electrical/mechanical engineering, robotics, computational neuroscience, applied mathematics, or a related field
Strong written and oral communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across multi-institutional teams
Desirable — Foundational AI expertise:
Lead-author publication record in top-tier AI, machine learning, data science, or robotics venues
Desirable — Applied expertise:
Analysis of neuroscientific or biomedical data and physiological signals (motion capture, EMG, force plates)
Multimodal spatiotemporal machine learning integrating physiological signals, imagery, and natural language
Dynamic modeling, rigid body dynamics, biophysical digital twins, sequential decision-making, and state estimation
Experience conducting human-subjects experiments (biomechanics, neuroscience, HCI, or brain-machine interfaces)
