Postdoc Opportunity: Reasoning-Enhanced Small Language Models for Oncology at Vilnius University
Postdoc position
9/26/2026
Interested in making small language models reason better — and putting that reasoning to work on real clinical oncology data? The AI Methods Lab (AIML) at Vilnius University is hiring a 12-month postdoc on the REALM project.
If you work in efficient LLM fine-tuning, clinical NLP, or reasoning-focused model development and want a project with a genuine clinical deployment target, this one's worth a look — no Lithuanian required.
About the Position
Role: Postdoc, REALM project — Reasoning-Enhanced Small Language Models for Oncology Data
Host: Artificial Intelligence Methods Lab (AIML), Vilnius University, in collaboration with the National Cancer Institute
Duration: 12 months, full-time
Start date: January 2027
Salary: €3,739/month gross
Language requirement: Lithuanian not required
What You'll Be Working On
The REALM project is about building small language models that can reason effectively over oncology data — and actually deploy on-premises in a clinical setting, rather than staying in the lab. The technical scope covers:
PEFT/QLoRA fine-tuning
Reasoning-enhanced small language models (SLMs)
Clinical NLP
Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG)
Cross-lingual adaptation for Lithuanian oncology text
On-premises deployment
It's a project that spans efficient model adaptation, domain-specific reasoning, and the practical realities of getting a model running securely inside a healthcare institution.
About AIML
The Artificial Intelligence Methods Lab is a leading AI research group at Vilnius University, working to advance AI and machine learning methods in Lithuania. This project is carried out in partnership with the National Cancer Institute, connecting the lab's methodological work directly to real oncology data and clinical needs.
