PhD Opportunity: Machine Learning & Statistics at the University of Oslo (Integreat)

PhD position

9/26/2026

Want to help build the next generation of private, fair, and useful synthetic data? Integreat and the University of Oslo are looking for a PhD Research Fellow to join their team.

If you're early in your research career and excited about machine learning methods that genuinely matter for society — fairness, privacy, and responsible use of data — this could be the position for you.

About the Position

  • Role: PhD Research Fellow in Machine Learning and Statistics

  • Host: University of Oslo & Integreat – Norwegian Centre for Knowledge-driven Machine Learning

  • Duration: 3 years (with a possible 4th year for teaching/supervision duties)

  • Focus: Developing deep learning–based synthetic data generators that balance strong utility with privacy protection — including new measures of privacy and fairness for assessing and training these generators

  • Department: Statistics and Data Science group (Department of Mathematics), in close collaboration with the Machine Learning group (Department of Informatics)

  • Deadline: Friday, October 16, 2026

What You'll Be Working On

This project sits at the intersection of machine learning, statistics, and ethics. You'll be developing methods that don't just generate synthetic data — they generate synthetic data people can actually trust: private enough to protect individuals, fair enough to avoid encoding bias, and useful enough to power real research and applications. You'll also be asked to critically assess the limitations of these approaches, which means this role suits someone who wants to think as carefully about the implications of their work as the technical details.

What They're Looking For

  • A Master's degree (or equivalent) in computer science, statistics, data science, mathematics, or a related field

  • Strong programming skills

  • Fluent written and spoken English

  • Genuine interest in the ethical dimensions of the research

  • A collaborative mindset — you'll be working across disciplines, not in a silo

Candidates without a completed Master's degree have until 30 June 2026 to finish their final exams and can still apply.

Why Integreat?

Integreat is a Centre of Excellence funded by the Research Council of Norway, bringing together researchers across machine learning, statistics, logic, language technology, and ethics — with branches in both Oslo and Tromsø. As a fellow, you'll join INTREF, the Integreat Young Researchers' Forum, which offers structured training, transferable-skills workshops, mentorship, research visits, and career-development support. You'll also have access to a strong network of national and international collaborators, research mobility funding, and a genuinely supportive, family-friendly working environment.
