OIST Graduate University PhD 2027: Fully Supported Five-Year PhD in Okinawa, Japan (Deadline 15 November)

PhD position

10/25/2026

Deadline: 15 November 2026 (23:59 JST) | Location: Okinawa, Japan | Fields: Science and Technology, interdisciplinary | Funding: Guaranteed financial support package

If you want a PhD in a small, international, research-intensive university with no traditional departments, the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) Graduate University is a distinctive option. Applications for the Winter Admissions Workshop 2027 round close on 15 November, and there is no written entrance exam.

About the programme

OIST runs a five-year PhD programme with a small student intake, which gives students an excellent faculty-to-student ratio. According to OIST’s own introduction to the programme, it has 277 PhD students, 79% of them from overseas. The school is interdisciplinary and doesn’t have separate academic departments, so students can explore different research areas before committing to a research unit.

Funding and student support

OIST says all students receive an internationally competitive financial support package, and the university guarantees it. Financial support starts at approximately 2.6 million JPY (taxable) in the first year and rises with academic progress to approximately 3.6 million JPY (taxable). Tuition is covered, and OIST says the package is enough to ensure a comfortable standard of living.

The package also includes:

  • Relocation support to Okinawa

  • A personal computer

  • Financial support for educational travel and conference attendance

  • Housing at student rates on campus. Doctoral students are expected to stay on campus for at least their first year.

  • Personal accident and liability insurance, plus access to an on-campus health centre and clinic and a wellbeing service

OIST’s student affairs section helps with student visa applications, including supporting documents, the offer of a place and the Certificate of Eligibility. Students without a valid student visa can’t register, so contact student affairs at least three months before your registration date if you need help. Students are also strongly encouraged to apply for external fellowships.

Key dates

  • Application deadline: 15 November 2026, 23:59 JST

  • Shortlisting results: Late December 2026

  • Admissions Workshop interviews (online): Mid-to-late January 2027

  • Final results: Early February 2027

  • Enrolment: 1 May 2027 or 1 September 2027

Applicants must take part in the Admissions Workshop that matches their application round, and all admissions processes are carried out remotely. Dates may be subject to change.

Who can apply?

The basic requirement is completing a bachelor’s, master’s or equivalent degree before the admission date. You can submit an application at any time before each deadline, and it will be considered at the next Admissions Committee meeting. OIST doesn’t require a specific undergraduate major, so applicants from physics, biology, chemistry, mathematics, computer science, engineering and related fields are all welcome.

How the selection works

OIST does not use written entrance exams. Instead, shortlisted applicants are invited to a mandatory online Admissions Workshop, where interviews and meetings with faculty form the basis of selection.

How to apply

OIST only accepts application documents online. You create an account on the OIST application website, then prepare your documents in English, save them as PDFs and upload them. If you don’t have a passport when you apply, you can upload another government-issued ID.

The documents typically include:

  • A statement of purpose explaining your aspirations and why OIST is a good fit

  • Academic transcripts and your degree certificate or proof of expected completion

  • At least two recommendation letters, which should be received in the system before you submit

  • A copy of your passport or other government-issued ID

  • Optional extras such as GRE scores, publication abstracts or presentation details

Check the application page for the exact list and any length limits. OIST also publishes a PhD supervision availability page and a PhD FAQ, so look at both before you apply.

Apply: oist.jp (Admissions, then PhD Program, then Apply to PhD)

Tips for a strong application

  • Read the supervision availability page first. Knowing which research units are open helps you write a specific statement of purpose.

  • Make the statement about fit. Explain what interests you about OIST’s interdisciplinary model and which research areas you’d like to explore.

  • Ask referees early. The letters need to be in the system before you submit, so don’t leave this to the last week.

  • Prepare for the Admissions Workshop. Being shortlisted means online interviews and faculty meetings, so be ready to discuss your past research in detail.

  • Plan your visa timeline. If admitted, student affairs needs three months’ notice before registration if you need visa help.

  • Consider the Research Internship. If you want to try OIST first, the internship is a known route into the PhD.
