If you want a fully funded PhD where you can apply straight after your Bachelor's, spend your first year exploring labs before committing to one, and work in English from day one, the Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA) should be on your list. The application portal for the 2027 intake is now open, and it accepts applicants from all over the world.
About the programme
ISTA is a research institute on the outskirts of Vienna with a single, interdisciplinary graduate school covering astronomy, biology, chemistry and materials, computer science, data science and scientific computing, earth science, mathematics, neuroscience and physics. Its scientists come from more than 80 countries, and English is the language of instruction and communication across the institute.
Students spend the first year on coursework and lab rotations before affiliating with a research group. That way you can test whether a topic and a group really suit you before starting in-depth thesis research in the second phase. Research groups are small, and students work closely with faculty and have access to the institute's research facilities.

Who can apply?
Students with a Bachelor's or Master's degree in biology, chemistry, neuroscience, mathematics, computer science, physics, data science and scientific computing, astronomy, earth science or a related area are encouraged to apply. You do not need a Master's degree to enter the programme.
One thing to check early: not every professor listed on the ISTA website is recruiting PhD students this cycle. If a group does not appear in the application portal, it is not taking new students right now, although you may still be able to do a rotation there later in the programme.
What you need to apply
Applications are only accepted through the online portal, and all documents must be in English.
CV
Statement of purpose. Describe your past research projects, motivation, skills and background relevant to the groups you selected, with an emphasis on the technical skills you have. Explain what attracts you to ISTA and identify potential groups. The ISTA advert on jobs.ac.uk gives a limit of 1 to 2 pages.
Short answers (5 to 8 lines each) to three questions:
Which research groups at ISTA (up to three) are relevant for you, in what order, and why?
Pick a paper by an ISTA professor that you would have liked to be part of. Give its DOI, explain why it excites you and how you could have contributed.
Describe your most meaningful research experience so far: methods, your role, challenges and key outcomes.
University transcripts and diplomas for every degree programme and year you have attended or are enrolled in, with the full list of courses and grades. Submit them in English and in the original language. For ongoing studies, upload your latest transcript.
Contact details of 3 referees who can assess your academic and research performance.
ISTA has also published guidance on the use of generative AI in applications, so read it before you start writing.
How selection works
The selection committee looks at:
Undergraduate performance, especially in field-specific courses
Reference letters from professors and senior scientists. One letter from industry is acceptable, but academic letters are given priority. Referees are asked about your analytical ability, technical proficiency, independence and commitment.
Statement of purpose: your research experience, academic fit and how the programme fits your career plans
Additional field-specific skills, such as internships, research projects, science Olympiads, programming languages or lab techniques
Transferable skills, such as communication, teamwork, international experience and leadership in student organisations
Diversity, for example a woman in computer science, mathematics or physics, or an applicant who switched fields
ISTA encourages early applications, and professors may contact promising candidates before the standard interview period.
How to apply
Apply through the official portal at apply.ista.ac.at/phd_open_call_2027. You will need to create an account, and the portal sends an activation link and a verification code at every login, so use an email address you check often and look in your spam folder. Fill out the form on a desktop browser, because mobile browsers are not supported.
Full details are on the ISTA PhD Application & Admissions page, and there is a step-by-step manual for the application form. Browse the list of research groups before you write anything. Questions go to phd.admissions@ista.ac.at.
